Brief history....
After the pirate raids of 1140 – 1145 the Emperor Manuel Comnenus I decided to fortify the whole island which was later to be the inner ward of the castle.

When the Byzantine Emperor Manuel Komnenus II ruled in 1267, the fortress of Kassiopi was the largest Angevin castle built in the best medieval methods.
The outer ward being over a kilometre in periphery and furnished with a few small towers, remnants of which can still be seen today oÂn the hill overlooking Kassiopi. |
Starting in 2007 the castle has undergone some extensive painstaking repair and restoration work.
